TITLE : Quantum boomerang effect
SPEAKER : Patrizia Vignolo (Université Côte d’Azur, CNRS, Institut de Physique de Nice)
It was recently shown that wavepackets with skewed momentum distribution exhibit a boomerang-like dynamics in the Anderson model due to Anderson localization: after an initial ballistic motion, they make a U-turn and eventually come back to their starting point. In this paper, we study the robustness of the quantum boomerang effect in various kinds of disordered and dynamical systems: tight-binding models with pseudo-random potentials, systems with band random Hamiltonians, and the kicked rotor. Our results show that the boomerang effect persists in models with pseudo-random potentials. It is also present in the kicked rotor, although in this case with a specific dependency on the initial state. On the other hand, we find that random hopping processes inhibit any drift motion of the wavepacket, and consequently the boomerang effect. In particular, if the random nearest-neighbor hopping amplitudes have zero average, the wavepacket remains in its initial position.

Patrizia Vignolo was born in 1970 in Lavagna - Italy. She studied for her master degree in Physics in Pisa - Italy, while her master thesis was developed in A. Aspect's team (Paris XI) about the non-destructive detection of the reflection of an atomic cold gas (1994). In 1995 she continued her research in the same team with a research fellowship funded by the "Human Capital and Mobility" project. Then she went back to Pisa in the team directed by G. Grosso to prepare her PhD about electronic properties of conjugated polymers and defended her thesis in February 1999. From 2000 to 2006 she was first postdoc, then contract researcher at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa, in M. Tosi's team, where she started
working on the theory of ultracold gases. She got a permanent position as professor at the University of Nice - Sophia Antipolis - France in 2007. She held the positions of Directrice Adjointe (2012-2015), and Directrice (2015-2017) of the Institut Non-Linéaire de Nice - Sophia Antipolis.
