Maritime History Practice and Research Center

Pîrî Reis University, named after the famous 16th century Turkish admiral and cartographer, was established in 2008 to serve the maritime industry both in Turkey and at international levels by educating seafarers as well as to aim to research Turkish Maritime History and heritage and to convey this to future generations and to claim our maritime. For this purpose;

  • In 2010, Pîrî Reis University has decided to hold “the Congress of Maritime History”, once every two years, seeking  to emphasize the national, international and global character of the Turkish maritime history of the Black Sea, the Turkish Straits, the Agean and the Mediterranean Seas, the Caspian Sea, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
  • The First International Congress of Eurasian Maritime History, was organized in 2012 with the participation of the academicians and scholars from 21 different countries, presenting 101 papers.  The International Association of Maritime Studies (IAMS) was also founded during the Istanbul congress by a group of participating scholars and the Presidency and the secretarial tasks have been decided to be carried out by Pîrî Reis University by consensus.
  • The Second International Congress of Eurasian Maritime History had been decided to be held in St.Petersburg/Russia in 2014,
  • The year 2013 was declared as “Pîrî Reis Year” by UNESCO, as it was the 500th anniversary of “Pîrî Reis World Map” dated 1513. Pîrî Reis University has had a great contribution to the declaration of “Pîrî Reis Year” to UNESCO.
  • Pîrî Reis University attended both national and international events of the “Pîrî Reis Year” in 2013.
  • By September 19, 2013 the “Maritime History Research and Practice Center” was founded within Pîrî Reis University to gather the finished and ongoing maritime history studies under the same roof and promote Turkish Maritime History effectively in the world. The activities of the  “Maritime History Research and Practice Center” has been coordinated by the 22nd Commander of Turkish Naval Forces Admiral (R) Metin ATAC, member of board of trustees.
