1. English Preparatory Program and Exams Given at the Beginning of the Academic Year

Is the English Preparatory Program compulsory for all students?

Since Piri Reis University is an English medium university, all undergraduate students as well as Maritime Vocational Higher School students are required to complete the English Preparatory Program successfully.

How can I be exempt from the English Preparatory Program?

New students who want to be exempt from the English Preparatory Program are required to take and pass the exams given by the Preparatory Department. Also, students who can submit a document verifying that they have achieved an acceptable score in an international English proficiency exam recognized by the Senate at Piri Reis University may be exempt from the English Preparatory Program.

What is the English Placement Exam? Is taking the English Placement Exam compulsory?

The English Placement Exam is an exam to evaluate the English proficiency levels of the students who will be attending university for the first time. All students are required to take the English Placement Exam.


What is the date, time and place of the English Placement Exam?

What sections are there in the English Placement Exam?

The English Placement Exam will consist of grammar, vocabulary, as well as a writing section. In the writing section, the students will be required to write a paragraph.

What is the English Proficiency Examination? How many times is it held during an academic year?

The English Proficiency Examination is an exam that assesses the students’ proficiency in English. Students who pass the English Proficiency Examination will be considered as having successfully completed the English Preparatory Program and will be exempt from the Program. The English Proficiency Examination is held three times during an academic year: in September, February, and June.

What is the passing grade for the English Proficiency Examination?
 

For undergraduate students who would like to transfer to the 4-year undergraduate programs, and for Maritime Vocational Higher School (DMYO) students –whether or not they want to transfer from DMYO to Faculties; the minimum passing grade required is 60 (sixty) out of 100 (one hundred).

What are the parts/components of the English Proficiency Examination?

Written Exam: Assesses the Reading, Listening and Writing skills of the students, and their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar.

Speaking Exam: Assesses the students’ Speaking Skills.

Is there a way of being exempt from the English Preparatory Program without sitting the English Proficiency Exam?

In order for a student to be exempt from the English Preparatory Program, the student must receive the stated score in an international exam recognized by Piri Reis University as being equivalent to the PRU English Proficiency Examination.

Is a Prep Program Certificate from another University, obtained by successfully completing the English Prep Program at that institution acceptable for exemption from the Piri Reis University English Prep Program?

No, it is not. Students who have successfully completed the Prep Program at another university are still required to take the Piri Reis University English Proficiency Exam or receive the required score on one of the international language tests recognized by PRU as an equivalent.

2. Preparatory Program, Exams and Attendance

  What is the teaching system in the English Preparatory Program?

For preparatory students, a Modular System (course system) is in effect. The Academic Year is comprised of a total of 8 eight-week modules and 4 levels (Beginner, A1, A2 ve B1). Students are required to successfully complete each module before they can advance to the next one. Students who fail a module repeat the same 8 week module. For the students who cannot complete the module, summer module can be started by a decision of the University Administrative Committee.


Undergraduate students and Maritime Higher Vocational School students are required to complete each module successfully with an overall grade of at least 60% in order to advance to a higher level.


A student is required to comply with the Prep Department’s attendance requirements for that module and to be successful enough (getting minimum 50 as a Module Grade for both vocational and undergraduate students) in order to be eligible to take the Module Exit Test.

What are the requirements for eligibility to take the English Proficiency Exams offered during the academic year?

For the English Proficiency Exams held during the academic year in February and June, students who have successfully completed the B1 level will be eligible to take the English Proficiency Examination.

All students who have failed in the previous English Proficiency Examinations reserve the right to take the English Proficiency Examination given in September for the new students of the next academic year, and those students who successfully pass the English Proficiency Examination will then be able to study in their respective departments. Students who get an average and above 50% from the Placement Test have right to take the Proficiency Exam in September.

If I successfully complete the English Preparatory Program at the end of the 1st Semester, will I be able to study in my faculty in the 2nd Semester?

Undergraduate and Vocational School students who successfully complete the English Preparatory Program at the end of the 1st semester (those who pass the English Proficiency Exam) start attending classes in the respective departments of their faculties, in the 2nd semester.

Is attendance compulsory in the English Preparatory Department?

Yes, regular attendance is required at Prep Department. Students studying at all levels of the English Preparatory Program have to meet the attendance requirements of each module in order to qualify for the Module Exit Test given at the end of that module. Students are responsible for keeping track of their class attendance through the Student Affairs Information System (OIS).

For each 8 week module, students have to fulfil the rule of compulsory attendance which requires 85 % attendance. Students who exceed this absenteeism limit will be considered to have failed that module. Any medical report that compensates for absenteeism is certainly NOT accepted at Prep Department.

Am I entitled to make-ups for the exams and tasks that I have missed?

Students who have missed the exams of that module for any reason can take make-up exams provided that they submit a petition with required documents to the Head of Prep Department within 7 days following the date of the exam. For those students, make-ups for the exams can be implemented by the Head of Prep Department in accordance with the principles determined by the University Administrative Committee.

There are no make-ups for the Placement Test and Proficiency Exam.

How can I keep track of my grades and my attendance record?

You can check your grades and your attendance record by logging into the Student Affairs Information System (OIS) on our web page: http://student.pirireis.edu.tr/ using the user name and password that have been given to you during your registration.

How many times a module can be repeated?

As many times as students can, but students have to complete Prep education in maximum 2 years. After 2 years they lose their rights to attend Prep Department.
