Bologna Program Information

As in all sectors,  applications of electrical and electronics engineering  have  recently increased  in the maritime sector.  The prominent applications of electrical and electronics engineering in the sector nowadays include  integrated navigation systems that consist of radar, communications, GPS,  and computer subsystems,  electrical power generation and distribution systems, electronic control of  these power systems, and robotics. It is expected that developments in these technologies will  provide  for more automatic and autonomous  ships powered by electric systems.  It is also  envisioned that cargo operations of  these  platforms will be carried out by robots.

 

Accordingly, these recent developments  prompted the maritime sector to bring up engineers, who can design, produce, and manage electrical  and  electronics systems, and started engineering education in this field at bachelor's level , which enables  students to specialize in the following tracks :

 Communication
 Control
 Computer
 Power electronics

Communication engineering track is mainly  about the design, production, and management of wireless and satellite communication systems,  radar and GPS systems, which take place almost at all sea-going  vessels.

Control engineering track is mainly about  the design and manufacture of robotic systems,so that loading and unloading of cargo are accomplished  by means of autonomous or semi- autonomous robots, as well as maritime related  search operations .

Computer engineering includes designing special as well as general purpose computer systems to be used  in  maritime sector, and also covers designing  embedded microcomputers and microcontroller  systems so as to  provide autonomy or artificial intelligence to various onboard systems,  with aid of communications and control engineering applications.

Power electronics track specializes  in designing  quiet, efficient,  and automatic electrical power systems, that make  use of electronic components such as converters  and drivers.  This track also prepares students towards a career that includes taking part in the design, manufacture and management of all electric ships.

Employment Opportunities :

There are many academic and professional carrer alternatives for the graduates of electrical and electronics engineering field. Academically, they can enroll to communication, computer, control, power systems, or mechatronics post graduate programs.  Professionally, they can work at shipyards as engineers, or onboard of ships as    electrotechnical officers.  In addition to these two options,  they  can prefer to work as line officers on board of ships after completing the  maritime professional courses, required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO),  However, if they prefer to work as engineers at shipyards, after gaining enough experience, they can also enroll to master of business administration programs, and then continue  to their careers as  technical managers.
